    I was employed by AMK9 as the Kennel Master for their base in Taji. Before taking up the post I trained a group of 15 Ugandan handlers in Uganda to deploy to Iraq. After deployment, the handlers were deployed between Taji, Umm Khasar and Besmaya. Whilst I was based in Taji with 6 of the handlers increasing to 9 before I left. I was responsible for the continuation training and management of all of the teams, not only in Taji but also Umm Khasar and Mesmaya.

    I was initially employed as a handler but after a month in country I was promoted to position of Supervisor and Trainer. At that stage there were 80 dog teams on the ground at the embassy and this expanded to 120 teams over the next year the training with the training including German Shepherds, Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, Labradors and Springer Spaniels. Part of my duties on this project included the supervision, storage and Control of the Explosive Training Aids.

    I rejoined the SA Police in 1992 and was again stationed at Langlaagte Dog Unit in Johannesburg where I was started as a shift commander for a few months and then reassigned as instructor at the unit and was responsible for the training of Patrol Dogs, Explosive Detection Dogs, Narcotics Detection Dogs and Search and Rescue dog’s. During this time there was an average of 55 Dog Teams at the unit at any one time. I was also responsible for the training of police dogs and handlers to take part in Working Dog competitions and am a South African Working Dog Open Stakes (SAWDOS) Judge and registered as Judge with Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA). I was later promoted to second in charge at the dog unit and in 2002 I was promoted to Captain and had my first command at the Police Mounted Unit.

    Upon joining the South African Police Force my first duties were as a computer operator assisting the detectives in investigations on computer as computers were not common sight in the police at the time. From the flying squad I rotated out to operational police work and was promoted to sergeant and shift commander.
